Hoffman Fabrics has developed a fun collection called “Celebrate the Seasons.” Each panel includes a 24″ focus panel with close to a yard of coordinating fabric. We think they are so cute (images of all 12 at the end of the post) that we decided to design a free, fast, and fun pattern for each. And I decided to post the free January pattern today because there is definitely a chill in the air with the storm we have! 🙂

The quilt above finishes to 35″ x 39″ and is intended to be a wall hanging. You can easily make it larger by adding additional borders. The fabric requires to make the wall hanging are:

1 Celebrate the Seasons January Panel
1/2 yard dark blue fabric
1/4 yard white fabric, or a Fat Quarter
Scraps of black fabric, felt or wool
Scraps of orange fabric, felt or wool
10″ square fusible web
1 1/4 yard backing fabric of your choice
Crib size batting
Don’t forget your basic sewing supplies including a sewing machine with a new needle, Aurifil 50wt thread in a light color, rotary cutter, mat and ruler, pins and an iron.

Next, it’s time to cut your fabric.

Cut the Chill in the Air panel, separating the focus panel from the supplemental fabric. See Figure A.

Using a rotary cutter and ruler, trim the focus panel to 23.5″ wide x 25.5″ high, centering the motif

From your dark blue fabric cut:
(2) 1.5″ x 23.5″ strips
(2) 1.5″ x 25.5″ strips
(5) 2.5″ X width of fabric (WOF) strips – subcut (1) 2.5″ x WOF strip into (16) 2.5″ squares and save the remaining 4 strips for binding.

From your supplemental snowman fabric cut:
(2) 6.5″ x 25.5″ strips
(2) 6.5″ x 27.5″ strips

From your white fabric cut:
(4) 6.5″ white squares

Next, make your snowmen blocks!

• Place a dark blue 2.5″ square on the corner of a white 6.5″ square, right sides together, aligning the corners. Draw a diagonal line from two corners as shown in Figure B. Stitch along the drawn line. Trim 1/4″ inch from the sewn line, discarding excess.
• Press dark blue fabric open as shown in Figure C. Repeat on remaining three corners as shown on Figure D.
• Make four snowman blocks.
• Follow manufacturer’s instructions to fuse snowman eyes, nose and mouth to your snowman blocks. Trace the shapes provided or trace nickels for the eyes and dimes for the mouth.

Now, it is time to put it together!

• Sew a 1.5″ x 23.5″ blue strip to the top and bottom of the focus panel. Iron, pressing the seam to the darker fabric.
• Sew a 1.5″ x 25.5″ blue strip to the right and left sides of the focus panel. Iron, pressing the seam to the darker fabric.
• Sew a 6.5″ x 27.5″ snowman fabric outer border rectangle to the right and left sides. Iron, pressing the seam to the snowman fabric.
• Sew a snowman black to the short sides of the 6.5″ x 25.5″ snowman fabrics to create your top and bottom borders. Iron, pressing seam to the snowman fabric.
• Attach top and bottom borders. Make sure your snowmen are all facing the same direction given this is a directional wall hanging.
• Finish your wall hanging by quilting and binding as desired.
